Where Have I Been?

Hey there, I have been away from quite a while. In the attempt of finding something interesting to talk about, I found nothing, and haven’t written in ages.

Finally I found a way to approach the German language from a nicer angle, which is… Watching a German TV series, in German!!! Yes sir, I have devoured all the three seasons of Türkish für Anfänger and let me tell you – I loved it, and I love German!!! Unfortunately I still hate German literature deeply, but hey, what ya gonna do.

I finally managed to wear a ring on my nose! I had been trying for a while, but for some mysterious reason it just wouldn’t go in… After a couple of days of desperate attempts, anyway, I won! I don’t come out very nice in photos, but there’s chance I’ll post a pic of it on my Instagram, stay tuned. On the other hand, my two new ear piercings got a little infected and I hadn’t even noticed – my threshold of pain has gone crazy high after my years of continuous stomach aches. Man, can’t I keep my eyes on two things at a time??! Evidently not…

I’m also considering my next tattoo… Here in Brazil it’s much cheaper than in Italy, and there’s a place I can trust cause many of my boyfriend’s friends got tattooed there. The design is ready, but two things and three quarters (yeah, I’m a big fan of Harry Potter) are stopping me:

  1. My boyfriend is not a big fan of tattoos. I know he likes me anyway, but I have this irrational fear that once I make the tattoo he might not feel attracted to me as he does now… Yes, I know I should choose for myself, it’s my body, etc, but he’s my boyfriend and I care about him liking me!
  2. My parents. Yes, I’m 24 (and a half!). Yes, I can spend six months a year on the other side of the world. Yes, I already have two tattoos. Yes, it’s my body. Yes, I should grow up and not give so many f**ks.
  3. This is actually my 2 and three quarters point, but the numbered list is automatic, so: Saving money.

Here’s a little piece of wisdom on tattos from my guru Elizabeth Gilbert:

“I know a woman who gets tattoos all the time. She acquires new tattoos the way I might buy a new pair of earrings. She wakes up in the morning and announces, “I think I’ll go get a new tattoo today.” If you ask her what kind of tattoo she’s planning on getting, she’ll say casually, “I dunno….I’ll figure it out when I get to the tattoo shop. Or I’ll just let the artist surprise me.”

Now, this woman is not a teenager. She’s a grown woman with adult children, and she runs a successful business. She’s also really cool, uniquely beautiful, and one of the freest spirits I’ve ever met.

When I asked her how she could mark up her body so casually and so permanently, she said, “Oh, but you misunderstand: It’s not permanent! It’s temporary.”

Confused, I asked, “You mean, all your tattoos are temporary?”

She smiled like a sexy rock ‘n roll Buddha and said, “No, honey. My tattoos are permanent — it’s my BODY that’s temporary. And so is yours. We’re here on earth for a very short while. I just want to decorate my temporary self as playfully and beautifully as I can, while I still have time.”

I love this so much, I can’t even tell you.

I myself am not covered with tattoos. (Although I do have two of them. Before I went traveling for Eat, Pray, Love, I had two words written into my forearms in white ink: COURAGE and COMPASSION.) But I do want to live the most vividly decorated temporary life I can. I don’t just mean physically. I mean emotionally, spiritual, intellectually. I don’t want to be afraid of bright colors, or big love, or major decisions, or new experiences, or risky creative endeavors, or sudden changes, or even great failure.

BECAUSE IT’S ALL JUST TEMPORARY.”

And now tell me, you pretty little cuties, you, do you have any tattos? Are you planning on getting any new ones?

  1. Hey, it’s good to hear from you! So I’m not a fan of tattoos at all (I have nothing against those who have them, I’m just not into it), but I do think that if you want to get another one you should, no matter what your boyfriend thinks. If he truly loves you, he won’t mind. Anyway, I don’t have any, though I do think that it’s kind of cool when people get lyrics from songs tattooed like on the back of their shoulder. I also saw a movie once where a guy had three stars on his arm that looked okay, but again, I’d never personally get one.
